How to restore a cement sink?

I want to restore an old cement sink to go in our newly renovated laundry. I want to keep the cement look etc but I want to seal it. Also, the base of the sink inside is quite corse and I want to use something that will help smooth it out - otherwise it will build up dirt and grime and be hard to clean. Advice wanted - how and what to use!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your concrete laundry tub.

In order to restore the surface finish of the cement sink, I suggest sanding the entire surface with 240grit sandpaper to remove the sealer that is currently still on the surface of the tub. Make sure to sand the bottom section of the tub to remove all the old water marks on its surface. Finish the surface with a 400grit sandpaper to get a smooth finish. I recommend using a detail sander so that you can get into the tight corners of the sink.

Once the surface has been sanded smooth, I suggest washing the surface with water and detergent in combination with a bristle brush. Once the sink is totally dry, I propose looking at the Cromellin concrete sealers. These sealers are made for driveways and walkways so will produce a tough finish. However, using strong chemicals such as bleach and acid can strip these sealers and damage the surface of the sink. Please keep in mind that these sealers are not designed for actual laundry situations but are made to cover concrete surfaces and seal them.
