How to build a built-in BBQ under cover?

Hi,

I am planning to make my self a simple Built in bbq and one sink .

can I use wooden frame with wooden leg?

is necessary any sheet under BBq for wight project ? If yes which sheet is the best?

I would like to hide wooden leg and frame .

can I use any wood liner ?

in back side will

be rain water will

be affected so which is best to cover back side ? Is there any wooden liner available?

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

In outdoor areas, you will have to use H3 Treated Pine for your framing. The framing will have to follow conventional construction methods, using a top and bottom plate alongside vertical studs to ensure the benchtop is braced laterally and supported vertically.

The frame will need to be clad with non-combustible material such as fibre cement sheeting and allow for ventilation in line with Australian Standard 5601.1.

Yes, you will need to have a sheet underneath the BBQ to support the weight and be compliant with the relevant standards around non-combustible construction.

Check out this example from the manual of the Jumbuck Astro 4 Burner Built In BBQ for some guidance based on the dimensions of their product.

You mentioned that the BBQ will be subject to rain? Can you show me the location where you are planning to put it?

Yes ,

here is attached pictures of my alfresco 310 cm between wall to wall , bbq table will come there and the front area will be facing inside only back side affect the water issues, also I am planning back side leg joints with top roof and cover with like outdoor sheet . Under bbq which sheet good for protection?

Hi @Revi,

Is the plan to use a built-in BBQ like your plans or a standalone BBQ with some benches built on either side, like in the image?

It is important that whatever design you use is in line with the recommendations for your specific BBQ.

In your example, they have used decking boards like these SpecRite 90 x 19mm Merbau Pre-Oiled Decking, which are suitable for use in wet areas and can be used to clad your whole frame besides the area where the BBQ sits if you are using a built-in BBQ.

If you are using a built-in BBQ like your original plans, then the BBQ will have to sit on and be surrounded by non-combustible fibre cement sheeting such as Villaboard.

Hi @Revi,

The BBQ itself needs to sit on non-combustible material such as the Villaboard I mentioned above.

For your timber benchtops on the sides, this SpecRite 2200 x 600 x 26mm Multi-Use Merbau Panel would match the cladding nicely. Alternatively, this Practa 2200 x 600 x 26mm Acacia Timber Benchtop would look fairly similar at a lower price point.

Hi @Revi,

You can use hardwood Merbau, or treated Pine outside. If the timber is going in the ground it needs to be H4 treated Pine.

The Mebau post in your first image is fine for above-ground use, and the H4-treated Pine post in your second image is good for above or below-ground use.
