How to assemble Mimosa 3 x 3m Lava Portsea Louvre Semi Permanent Gazebo?

I am thinking of buying the Mimosa 3 x 3m Lava Portsea Louvre semi permanent gazebo- Mimosa 3 x 3m Lava Portsea Louvre Semi Permanent Gazebo - Bunnings Australia

I know the wind rating is not as good as some other pergolas, but it would be located in a very sheltered area that has a big concrete slab. I could dynabolt straight into the slab, but given the semi permanent branding, my preference is to cut holes and extend and sink the feet into cement, using steel plates.

The gazebo/pergola looks straightforward to assemble, but there are always little tricks and traps.

All feedback welcome, particularly if anyone has actually assembled a Mimosa 3x3 Lava Portsea

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

It is important to note that semi-permanent gazebos, such as the one you are looking at, will often require approval from your local council. We have copies of the engineering plans that can be submitted for this application which can be provided upon your request.

When installed as a semi-permanent structure, the engineering plans for the Mimosa 3 x 3m Lava Portsea Louvre Semi Permanent Gazebo call for a concrete pier that is a minimum of 450mm in diameter and 600mm deep, so cutting holes in the existing slab and pouring a dedicated pier is essential.

I have built them for display in-store, but never in a semi-permanent setting, but the only real difference is the anchoring. I can say that the construction is fairly simple and following the installation instructions is relatively easy. I am happy to assist along the way if you run into any issues.

Hi Jacob, Many thanks for the info. It confirmed my suspicions re the substantial anchoring. I would certainly appreciate a copy of the engineering plans.

My initial search through Wollongong Council docs seemed to suggest that Council approval is a moot point. When does a pergola graduate from semi permanent to a permanent structure ? I will need to do some more research.

As I live in a gated over 55's estate, there is an internal process that has to be followed. This is where the engineering plans will be handy. I have also commenced the Dial Before You Dig process. If I get through the Estate process, I will probably engage a techo to locate cables, drains etc etc. If I have to get Council approval, I figure that a well documented paper trail would be needed.

It is lucky I am retired. It sounds like a full-time job!

ps I saw your message re installers. I would certainly have a go myself, however having renovated four houses, my days of climbing on ladders are over. Besides, you could imagine the front page of the Illawarra Mercury, 'Ambitious pensioner falls from ladder etc etc'

Hey Eric, Many thanks for the plans. It is a toss up between the Mimosa or the Toja Grid Wall Mount pergola kit. Do you have plans for the Toja Grid Wall Mount? I understand the ground anchoring requirements (400 wide x 600 deep hole filled with concrete). The TG Wall Mount means two less holes.

The engineering plans for a Toja Grid pergola depends on your local council’s building regulations and the size of the structure. If you’re installing a small, freestanding pergola that meets exempt development rules in your state (typically under a certain height and size limit), you may not need engineering plans.

However, if your pergola is large, attached to a building, or in a cyclone-prone or high-wind area, your council may require engineering certification to ensure it complies with structural and wind load requirements.

It’s best to check with your local council or a private certifier to confirm what’s needed for your specific installation. If engineering plans are required, Toja Grid doesn’t provide certified plans, I therefore suggest engaging the services of an engineer to design your pergola.

Please note that the Toja Grid kits do not include Timber and Anchoring hardware.

Hello mate, iam pretty tight for space and i need to ensure before I purchase its 3mx3m, there was a review stating its actually 3.1x3.1 could you please advise this please, sorry for the inconvenience. The end of my concrete is 3.1, there lies my issue, that 100mm make a difference.

Hey Warwick, No probs at all. I have done some measurements/pictures. While the pergola itself is 3 x 3, it is the cap over the feet that is slightly larger (see photos-sorry I gave up trying to rotate them) The feet sit inside the cap, and it is a pretty snug fit. You may be able to trim the feet and modify the cap, but you might run into warranty issues. My unit was done in two stages. With help from neighbours, stage 1 was assembling the frame (four posts and connecting beams) temporarily tied with rope to supporting bits. Stage 2 (anchoring, roof etc) was done by two builder mates. If you decide to go ahead with it, feel free to give me a hoy if you run into any probs. The kit instructions, while not perfect, are pretty good. It was a fairly seamless task. cheers. pete

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

I've spoken with the team at a couple of stores that have them on display, and they have confirmed that when installed plumb, the posts are 3000mm from outside to outside, but the distance from the outside of the attachment plates at the bottom of the posts is closer to 3100mm from outside to outside.

There can also be some slight variation if the posts are not installed perfectly plumb, but the team members who checked the displays informed me that they were pretty spot on.

This means you could physically fit it in the space, but it would be right on the limit, and you would have to put bolts in far too close to the edge of the slab, so you would likely blow out the edge of the slab.

Unfortunately, you might have to look at an alternative solution.

Is there any way you could add a small extension to the concrete slab? Or is it tight up against a fence line?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about footings for the gazebo.

Earlier in the discussion I suggested that It’s best to check with your local council or a private certifier to confirm what’s needed for your specific installation. Depending on your location, I highly suspect that it will require a concrete pier as this is the most secure footing often used.
