Steps
Step 1

Sketch the design you would like on the cardboard or Mdf. I used a cartoon image of a whale shark as my inspiration.
Step 2

Cut out your stencil using your drawing. This can be done using the jigsaw and bandsaw.
Step 3

Using the stencil, draw the shapes you need on each off cut of timber being sure to mix up the types of timber for an individualised look. Cut each shape out using the jigsaw and/or bandsaw.
Step 4

Sand each piece individually using sand paper and the disc sander.
Step 5

Cut another piece of Mdf using your finished wood pieces as the stencil. This will be your backing to hold it all together. Glue each piece down using the wood glue.
Step 6

Use the Dremel rotary tool to add the details such as eyes and spots.
Step 7

Apply two coatings of gloss wood varnish.
Step 8

Allow to dry before attaching a photo-frame hook to the back for hanging.
