What paint rollers give smooth gloss finish?

Hello everyone,

I am looking for paint roller recommendations. I need to repaint doors, windows, wardrobes, etc.

I purchased these UNi-PRO High Density Foam Rollers not I am not quite happy with them. It says on the package that these rollers will provide super fine gloss finish, but in reality they create a bit rough texture for my liking rather than smooth and gloss finish.

I wanted to achieve smooth finish, something similar to a melamine board texture many kitchen cabinets made from.

Can you please recommend paint rollers that can actually deliver smooth and gloss finish.

If you are after the next step up when it comes to paint finishes, I suggest thinking about investing in an electric paint sprayer such as the Wagner W100 Wood And Metal Paint Sprayer or the Ozito 400W Power Paint Spray Gun. These paint spray guns when operated properly can give you the type of commercial finish you might be after. The main advantage of course is that you get a roller and brush free finish.

But if you wish to use rollers, I suggest looking at the Monarch 130mm 3 Piece Doors, Trims & Cupboards Ultra Microfibre Roller Kit

which is designed for gloss paint.

Hi Alex,

Sorry for what's bound to be a late reply, I've had a similar experience to you on a high gloss project recently, and worked out a solution that suited the job—the trick is to add more solvent to the paint to thin it a little from the can so that when you apply it, it flows more evenly and (hopefully) doesn't leave any roller or brush marks—gravity smoothes out the slightly wetter paint as it's drying.

If you're using a water-based acrylic then just add a small amount of water by trial and error to thin it out—you don't want it too thin, otherwise you won't get a coat on at all.

There's been another suggestion by Bunnings to consider a spray paint unit, the Ozito is very affordable and a good unit, which could give you a more uniform coat—but the trick there is actually the same—you have to thin the paint down for the spray unit to achieve a certain flow rate before applying.

So any of spray, brush or roller could give you a good result by thinning the paint out of the can.
