How to build a handrail?

Hi,

I would like some guidance on adding a handrail to my front deck.

I have attached a photo of the deck and a reference photo of the handrail style I am considering. I’m unsure about the best positioning to ensure both security and accessibility. Would it be best to install the handrail on both the left and right sides? However, if I install it on the right and middle, would that limit full use of the right side? I’d also like to understand materials /moulting would be best for durability and weather resistance.  What would be the best way to anchor the handrails to ensure they are sturdy and long lasting?

If you want to avoid obstructing access on either side, the best approach would be to install a central handrail that runs diagonally down the middle and between the two entry points. This would provide support while keeping both sides open for easy movement. However, if accessibility is your priority, installing handrails on the other edges of the stairs as well might be the better option, ensuring a stable grip no matter which side someone approaches from.

For durability and weather resistance, materials like powder-coated aluminium or hardwood would be ideal. Aluminium requires less maintenance, while hardwood can provide a natural look but will need regular sealing to prevent weathering. 

When it comes to anchoring, the best method depends on your deck’s construction. If you're securing the handrails to timber decking, you'll need to attach posts to the deck’s subframe using heavy-duty bolts or coach screws. If you’re installing them on concrete, use masonry anchors or expansion bolts for a solid hold. For extra stability, consider using post supports or base plates bolted to the deck.
