How to build a bedhead?

Hi clever Bunnings community!

I have an idea for a DIY bed head using Castellated Panel Hazelwood. I plan on laying them horizontally (they are 3.6metre lengths) however the outer edges are ‘raw’. What kind of moulding do you suggest I attach at either end and the top? The panels will not need to run from the floor as much of the area is covered by the bed, side cupboards run from bed entirely to side walls. Pans can be secured to a board or directly to the wall behind bed. Thoughts??

Hi @jegan,

Thank you for your question, it certainly sounds like an interesting project.

As Ekodeck is a composite timber product, it will naturally expand and contract, meaning whatever we use to cap the panel should be attached to the end of the panel only.

You could stick a timber moulding to the end of the panels with construction adhesive. Something like this 31 x 11mm 5.4m White Moulding Pine FJ Primed DAR, once painted to match, would look nice as a border piece.

Now I like your thinking! Using a product for another purpose 🙂 Oh yeah!

So instead of a moulding to go over the ends why not have the ecodeck butt up against a piece of vertical timber? So square timber vertical, horizontal ecodeck and then square timber the other side? The top could be the same sized timber as well. It could be a rectangular frame or even the two pots could go a little taller then the top crossbeam?

Love your imaginative thought process in using something left-field for your project. @JacobZ makes a good point in allowing the ends of the panel for some form of contraction and expansion. Though for internal use, I would think this should be minimal.

I think that last suggested port by @EricL is probably one I would go with in making a frame incorporating the end legs of the bed and using the feature panels as an insert to the bed-head. Allow a few mm clearance for that expansion @JacobZ mentioned. This design will allow you to make a far more solid connection for the side rails to the bed-end in order to support the weight of the bed base and mattress as well as those sleeping above.
