How to lock Colourbond gate on my side of my property?

I have a colourbond gate that helps my children move from my property into my ex-partners property (our properties back onto each other). I would like to have a lock on my side. I would like to try and install it myself. What type of lock and how can I install it? The fence and the gate don't line up, thanks

Hi @kelbie,

You could probably install a Pinnacle 150 x 12mm Matte Black Double Eye Padbolt at the top of the gate. The bolt section can be attached partially on the vertical upright and then onto the horizontal top rail. A hold can be drill in the post to accept the padbolt when secured. Metal screws can be used to install the padbolt.

Sliding the padbolt across will prevent the children accessing the gate and a padlock can be added for further security.

What drill type bit do I need to drill the hole in the post please? "A hold can be drill in the post to accept the padbolt when secured"

Do I need to predrill the holes for the Metal Screws?

Hi @kelbie,

Any quality drill bit will drill through steel as long as you take it slow, but if you'd like it to be as easy as possible, cobalt drill bits are very good with steel.

There is no need to predrill holes with metal screws as they come with a cutting tip. You just need to apply pressure while driving them into the steel, and they will cut through.

It would also be worth using a punch to create a small indent in the steel. This will help get both the drill bit and the screws started as they tend to skate across the steel when it is perfectly flat.

Make sure you wear gloves and take it slow.
