How open should the water valves be for the washing machine?

I just moved into a new apartment and the water pressure in all taps is very high. After installing the washing machine and connecting the pipes, I opened the valves all the way and the front loading machine filled all the way up during a tub clean cycle and water came out of the door as well as at the connection point between the valve and the water pipes. Is it advisable to open valves all the way, or turn them back a quarter of the way and leave them in that position?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In most cases, water valves for washing machines are designed to be opened fully to allow unrestricted flow to the machine. However, if you're experiencing extremely high water pressure, it can cause issues like leaks at the connection points or even water overflowing during certain cycles.

If water is leaking at the valve connection or the machine is overfilling, it’s a good idea to investigate a few things. 

First, make sure the hose connections are secure and the rubber washers are properly seated to prevent leaks. 

Next, check whether your washing machine has a working inlet valve. It’s supposed to shut off water once the drum is full, and if it’s malfunctioning, it can lead to overfilling. If this is the case, then your washing machine may need repairs.

If everything is installed correctly and the washing machine is working as it should, but the pressure is just too high, partially closing the valves is a safe workaround. This slightly restricts flow and can reduce pressure at the hose and connection points.

That said, it’s worth having your water pressure measured by a plumber. You might need a pressure-limiting valve installed where the mains enter your apartment, which is often required by plumbing standards anyway.
