What kind of doors for a living room?

Hi,

So we have two openings around a snug that we would like to put doors across.

The openings are 1980(w) x 2080(h) (pic attached).

There is no space for sliding doors that would disappear into a wall cavity, but we are happy to lose 1/3 of the horizontal space to a fixed panel (glass?) at one side. We do not want raised tracks across the floor of the openings.

Would barn doors suit this kind of opening, using a rail across the top? Thx

We do have the Rolltrak 2000 x 40 x 6mm Matte Black Bypass Barn Door Track Side Mount, which is a double barn door setup. At 2000mm wide, it might just be wide enough.

Barn doors could work for this kind of opening, but it depends on how much room you have on the right-hand side of the image. Since you're open to having a fixed panel on one side, you’d need enough space on the right to accommodate the barn door, which would cover about two-thirds of the opening’s width. Essentially, you’d want the remaining third (for the fixed panel) plus another third of the total width on the right side to allow the barn door to slide open without obstruction. If you have that space available, barn doors with a top rail could be a great option, and they would avoid the need for tracks across the floor.

My old loungeroom had some frosted glass doors (timber Frame) They didnt have a runner on the floor tho had a short "guide" that stuck out maybe 1/5th per door (The door itself covered the strip)The rail was much like a shower rail on top with a cowl around the whole lot to mask the rail mechanisim. It was silent and glided smoothly.

This is the only photo I have of the door back then lol For someone who takes multitude of photos I still miss shots I should have taken.

You can see how close fitting the doors were, they kept the warmth in nicely and the sound was lowered dramatically.

I just went and had a look as to how I would replace those doors if I had wanted. 🙂

Cowdroy 915mm 60kg Centurion Sliding Door Track Set used on a standard door. No track onthe bottom bar the guide at one edge per door. Depending on the style of your doors you want, you could go for a covered door or a frosted window or even a chequred style. The width I would see what is a standerd size for the style of doors you want and then work out if when open you are happy with the spacing.

Interior doors

Having a look at the standard widths, you may need to order a slightly larger door as you want a little overlap of the door to the wall when closed totally.

Could they be projected out from a wall with longer brackets, so that one sliding door on track 2, would slide across an inner sliding door on track 1, and both doors could be tucked away at one side of the opening? Are there brackets already made for this scenario? (Kinda like brackets for curtain rails that take two rails, but these would need to be much stronger).

I see they make bottom sliding tracks like this (https://www.bunnings.com.au/cordroy-3240mm-4-robemaker-door-track-set-white_p0383622) but I don't want the trip hazard of a floor rail across a door opening.

That would be interesting but problomatic 🙂 One thing I do remember with the old doors that I had (they used something like the link I showed) if the doors "overran" that bottom fin you could easily push them out and up like a pendulum 😕 Never happened but any visiting kids or doggos.... oh yeah.

The other thought I had tho it isnt a solid door. My sister has a windowed wall of panel blinds and they look really nice. You could have the same across your opening and they could concertina back out of the way against the wall. They would stop heat and light and are movable. They slide along a top multi thread track.

I had a look in bunnings and spotlight, no go and even Ikea didnt seem to have them. Have a google of "Panel blinds" and you will see what i mean.

Was just thinking of sliding doors and cam across these from Ikea.

SKYTTA sliding door system these hang off the ceiling on a track. It might be worth a wander through one of their display warehouses 🙂

Decided after all not to enclose the area... Moving around the house too much to keep opening and closing doors. Sometimes it just takes a while to figure these things out as a family.... Thx
