How to bond pvc pipe to a metal shower grate?

Hi,

I am building a DIY campervan and I am needing to bond a piece of PVC pipe to my metal shower grate and also the bottom of my kitchen sink drain is also PVC that needs to be bonded to the metal sink. What is the best sealent to use please? Thanks.

Hi @Guzza,

Do you have any photos of the shower waste and the sink waste that you could share?

Obviously, being in a campervan, the set-up will be slightly different, so I would need to see what we are working with to offer specific guidance.

Typically, a waste such as this Kinetic 50mm Stainless Steel Sink Basket Waste or this Caroma 40mm White Plug and Waste with Spacer, will have a threaded PVC portion that is screwed onto a trap such as this Caroma 50mm White Combination S And P Traps With Dishwasher Connection.

Generally speaking, PVC fittings are bonded to other PVC fittings using Red Priming Fluid and Type N Blue Cement Solvent, but this would not be suitable if they are being attached directly to metal. Silicone is also often used to seal up plumbing connections.

Once I can see what parts you have, then I can certainly offer further guidance.

Unfortunately, metal and PVC do not bond to each other well, so we will need to find a different solution, or you will risk leaks in your campervan.

That style of floor grate is usually installed on a tiled bathroom floor, and it requires a puddle flange to function correctly and attach to the PVC pipe beneath.

The metal sink can likely use a Kinetic 50mm Stainless Steel Sink Basket Waste, then a Holman 50mm DWV PVC Female Iron Adaptor to connect to your 50mm pipe.

The same solution may also be possible with your shower, but I would have to see it to be certain.

The sink is all sorted thanks.

As for the shower drain it will be hard to install that puddle flange. Is there a completely better solution? Maybe a full 1 piece shower drain either PVC or metal that can sit into an 18mm marine ply and have a pipe under it of at least 50mm? (I could double the ply to 36mm) Or is there a metal down pipe that could be bonded to the steel grate rather than PVC?

Have you thought about using a Brasshards 80 x 50mm White Hexagonal Cup DWV Floor Waste. This has a 50mm PVC outlet so there should be no issue with joining it together with your PVC plumbing. Generally speaking, a puddle flange is necessary due to the water proofing and the Kinetic 80mm Chrome Plated Square Floor Grate just sits on the flange and is generally attached to the tile and adhesive.
