How to use a Fitta 60 x 62 steel H-Section sleeper post with a 50mm timber sleeper?

Hello,

I note there are 50 x 50mm steel upright H joiner posts for 50mm timber sleepers.

And, there are Fitta brand 60 x 62 H joiner posts in the length I'd prefer.

By using the Fitta brand, I'd assume there would be a 10-12mm slop between the post and the sleeper.

If this is correct, is it ok to use or is there something I'm missing?

You are correct that there will be some play if you were to use these sleeper posts with a 50mm sleeper. I believe they have allowed for this amount of play so that the sleeper posts can be used for a wider variety of sleepers, including concrete, composite and timber sleepers.

It is fairly normal for there to be a bit of play in retaining posts, and it is relatively easy to manage. When you install the sleepers, just slip a timber wedge or a packer in between the sleeper and the retaining post to wedge the sleeper forward against the front of the sleeper post.

 

Once the sleepers are backfilled, you'll never even know it is there.
