Nails or screws for connecting joist hangers into bearers?

Hi All Carpenters.

I am looking at using either Pryda timber connector nails or screws for fixing joist hangers into bearers.

I know according to the specifications you don't have to use as many screws as nails, but I was wondering are there any pros and cons to either or is it just down to pricing.

Both timber connector nails and screws are approved options for fixing joist hangers, but they each have a few differences worth considering. Nails are quicker to install and generally cheaper, which is why they’re often used for large projects. Screws, on the other hand, offer better pull-out strength and can give a tighter, more secure fixing — plus they’re easier to remove if you ever need to make adjustments down the track.

As you mentioned, if you're using screws, you’ll typically need fewer of them compared to nails. It can come down to pricing, but also think about ease of installation and the type of access you have to the fixing points.
