How to enclose and line interior of lower level?

Looking at enclosing and sheeting the downstairs storage area of my house to make into a more usable space. I'd like to enclose the open areas between the rafter and joists and current exterior cladding (yes it's asbestos will not be touching that). Any recommended options?

Are you planning on sheeting the ceiling in the space? If so, that would go a long way to hiding those open areas between the joists and the underside of the flooring above, including any gaps you're concerned about. Once the ceiling is in place, those spaces won’t be visible, and you’d mainly just need to block them off to prevent drafts, dust or critters from getting through.

If you’re not planning on installing a ceiling, or if you just want to physically block the gaps regardless, you can fill them using timber boards cut to size or cement sheeting. Both options are durable—timber’s easier to work with if you're cutting around awkward spaces, while cement sheeting is a good choice if you want something moisture-tolerant. Either way, just make sure the material is secured firmly between the joists and sealed around the edges if needed.
