How to secure broken timber shelving system?

I have to fix part of an Idea shelving system which broke on being moved. The only way to do it would be to use a little fixture like in the photo - the grey one is the smallest I could find at Bunnings and its not suitable - and the other one I had in my toolshed. The white one is preferable of the two, but I was wondering if Bunnings has anything smaller than the grey one.

Hi @ennoh,

These Carinya 20 x 20 x 15 x 1.4mm White Reinforcing Angle Brackets might be slightly smaller than the Carinya 25 x 25 x 20 x 2mm Galvanised Angle Make-A-Bracket. However, I think the hole is going to still be quite close to the edge.

Could you screw through the face of the bottom timber into the end of the joining piece to secure it?

Good idea Mitchell! The screw would have to be thin and at least 50mm in length. Can you suggest one?

How thick is the timber it will be screwing into @ennoh? Provided you predrill, a screw 1/3 of the thickness should be fine. Depending on the application, you also want it to go into the joined piece of timber by around 40mm. So if the side piece is, say, 35mm, I'd be going for a 75mm long screw. If you only need a 50mm screw then these Zenith 8g x 50mm Zinc Plated Hinge Long Thread Timber Screws would be fine.

I will have to drill through the larger piece into a narrow 9mm piece of wood.

That's quite narrow @ennoh. How thick is the piece you'll be drilling through?

We should probably go down to a 6g screw which is thinner, but they don't come in very long lengths such as the Zenith 6G x 40mm Zinc Plated Hinge-Long Thread Countersunk Head Timber Screws. The only way you could get around that would be to countersink them quite deeply into the side piece, so at least 20mm makes its way into the narrow piece. You'll also need to pre-drill the narrow piece to prevent it from splitting.

Well, if you counter sink the head of the screw 10mm into it @ennoh, that will give you 20mm penetration into the thinner section. That should work if there's not too much stress on the joint.
