How to fix water-damaged furniture?

Good Morning Bunnings community. I purchased a kitchen hutch and it has water damage to sides which I thought was going to be any easy fix but is not. Should I replace both sides where damage is or cut the bottom damaged part out and build a base around bottom? Any suggestions is appreciated. Thanks 🙂

Hi @projectmumdanni,

It looks like the panels on your hutch are quite compromised. Just looking at the way the material has disintegrated, I have to ask — is it pine, or could it actually be chipboard? I'd be a little surprised to see chipboard in this style of unit unless it's a more modern piece, but the way the damage looks certainly hints at that possibility.

Given the extent of the water damage, you would likely need to cut out the affected areas. However, it’s going to be tricky to create a seamless replacement, especially if you want it to blend in naturally with the original sides. Are you intending to paint the unit afterwards? If you are, it would make it a lot easier to disguise a grafted section of new timber into the existing sides.
