How to fix chipped front door?

Hi,

The previous owners of the house that I bought has left a nice present for me; a gash on the front door that was cause when they were moving some stuff out of the house. Yes, I did prove that it was done after the second inspection by me AND the building inspection, and yes my conveyancer is in discussions with theirs to get it fixed. However, if that doesn't happen, what does the community think the fix should be? Is it simple as some masking tape around the damage, and painting over it or do I need to do something else? It hurts more because it's the front door!

Unfortunately, if you want a good finish, you need to fill it, sand it smooth then repaint the entire door.

This is the only way you'll get a uniform finish as any patch or paint over will be noticeable. Generally, the steps will be to sand down the door and use a new primer on its surface. Just a quick thought here, If the previous owners or their removalist did this, you can legitimately get a professional in at their expense to rectify this! No need for you to DIY
