How to plant cactus cuttings?

hello,

I was gifted these cuttings about 3 weeks ago. They were given to me in a bucket with very shallow amount of soil and large rocks.  

Do I need to cut off the dark bits at the bottom and let it callus before potting? 

And when I pot them, is a mixture of plain potting mix, coarse sand and permute a good combo?

Hi @Mj411,

If the dark bits at the bottom are soft or mushy, it’s a good idea to cut them off cleanly with a sterile knife and let the cut ends callus over for a few days before potting.

As for the soil mix, plain potting mix on its own would hold too much moisture, so mixing it with coarse sand and perlite is a perfect idea — aim for a potting mix that is free-draining so the cuttings don't rot. Also, ensure the pot has good drainage.
