An upcycled console table for a hallway transformed by sanding, distressing with a hammer, and staining.
The project
The original boring console table definitely needed a revamp. It had a little damage on top so I decided to go with a distressed look for a rustic modern vibe.
Steps
Step 1
After removing the back piece I cleaned it all down with sugar soap and warm water. Started sanding with 80 grit sandpaper working my way up to 240 sandpaper, and fine paper 400 grit to smooth in between coats.
Step 2
I used a hammer both sides along with other tools to create dents, texture and lines, along with a chisel to remove some edging.
Here is the raw table after sanding and distressing.
Step 3
Stain is diluted Brazilian roast stain and vanish. It's Cabots water-based and I diluted it down by mixing one part stain with four parts Cabothane clear sealer.
I applied the stain using a brush along the natural grain of the timber.
Step 4
Close up results of the finished look.
