How to build a square sandpit with minimal wood cuts?

Hi,

I’m interested in building a simple square or rectangular sand pit. Which wood would you recommend? I don’t have a lot of power tools so just thinking minimal cuts and maybe screw together? The cheap sandpits on the Bunnings site don’t have great reviews so I just wanted to make a simple one.
Any advice is appreciated!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It is fantastic to have you with us.

How big a sand pit are you looking to create?

Anything in direct contact with the ground will need to be treated accordingly, so something like a H4 treated pine sleeper, is going to be your best bet.

They can be cut in store to the nearest 100mm and then simply screwed together with some 100mm galvanised batten screws.

Fence palings... wherever possible I use them for my projects.

I even run them through my Planer Thicknesser to get acceptable dressed pine.
These days timber is very expensive, a 1.2M length of 42 x 19mm is now over $5 dollars.

Have a look at 150 x 12mm 2.1m Fence Paling H3 Treated Pine CCA (0120259) to see if they are suitable.

They are $3.14 and can be easily cut with a handsaw (keep that thumb tucked in).

They can be secured with 400mm Plinth Peg Galvanised Steel (1100478)

Hi @stwyf,

I just wanted to add that you would need to use non-arsenic-treated sleepers or pailings for your project, such as ACQ or MicroPro. CCA is not suitable for such a project due to potential chemical leakage. However, you could paint them entirely to prevent skin contact.

You might like to check out How to build a sandpit with foldable cover. Even if you don't build the cover portion, it will still be helpful for a basic sandpit using sleepers.
