How to fix damaged plasterboard after removing MDF panels?

Hey guys just wondering if I can get some advise on how I can fix this wall up and get it ready to be painted.

This wall originally had a bunch of MDF panels glued to the wall (with liquid nails) and when I removed them off the wall it left this behind

I'm just wondering, after I've taken all the paint off the wall, do I need to apply a layer of plaster onto the wall before I can paint it? or should I be alright as is?

It's a bit hard to tell exactly what kind of wall surface we're looking at from the photo—it doesn’t appear to be standard plasterboard. Is the green layer what’s left of the paint or some sort of coating that was over the plasterboard? If so, it looks like it may have delaminated in places when the MDF panels were removed.

Regardless of the exact wall type, your goal is to end up with a smooth, even surface before painting. So once you’ve removed the rest of that loose or peeling layer, check how flat and smooth the wall is. Run a straight edge over it and feel for any ridges, dips or glue residue.

If the surface underneath is plasterboard, then yes, you could go over it with a skim coat of plaster to smooth everything out. Once that’s dry, give it a good sand, prime it with a sealer undercoat, and then it should be ready for painting.
