Steps
Step 1
Water level indicator.
You only need the wire rod.
Empty can. I now save them so i can periodically replace as needed.
Drill a hole half way between centre and rim.
The aluminum float tube with modified furniture knob plus wooden block for additional support.

Step 2
Run Dry Float switch
The float switch is mounted at at one end of 42 x 19mm pine timber and the top end secured to the rim of the bucket with a small bracket.
Step 3
Water pump.
The pump simply sits at the bottom of the bucket.
I made a small push-on filter from a larger (used) AQUAPRO Small Pre-Filter Sponge (2813407).
I used a mini coke can to protect the motor wire connections (wire nuts) and from here electric fencing wire (in conduit) back the garage aka workshop where it connects to the digital timer relay N/O contacts.

Digital timer and wiring diagram.
This is the digital timer I used, if you purchase this or a similar one make sure it is DC 12V.

The pump and the float switch wire connections are protected with a upside down mini coke can (or similar).
I used electric fence wire to connect from here to the timer in the workshop nearby which is powered by a 12V power adaptor.
Convert to solar... the timer could also be installed in a waterproof box along with a 12V AGM battery and solar controller plus solar panel.
Step 5
The float level switch is wired in series with the pump (+) wire.
The pump (-) wire straight through to the timer.
