How to remove a breakfast bar with multiple power points?

Hi all,

I have been procrastinating on this since I moved on 4 years ago. Does anyone have any suggestions to safety remove the breakfast bar? I plan to replace the old bench too. The bench is screwed into the top of the cabinets. There are four power points on the bar.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Lara0909. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about removing a breakfast bar.

The first step would be to have a licensed electrician disconnect the power points and safely isolate that section from power. Once that's done, you can remove the top of the breakfast bar—usually it's just screwed into place, so you can hit it upwards from underneath with a hammer or mallet to break the seal and release the fixings.

After the top is off, you’ll need to cut down the backboard and side panels so they're sitting below the height of your new benchtop. Then would typically be done with a circular saw set to a depth so it does not cut through into the cabinetry behind the panels.

When installing the new benchtop, make sure it's large enough to cover the tops of the cut panels. You can also install some trim or edging underneath to neaten up the cut areas and give the finished product a more professional look.
