How to remove centre post in carport?

Hi, I have an old carport that I want to convert to a garage. There is a centre post right in the middle that I would like to take out so the garage could house 1 car plus provide storage. The beams are all steel, but in the centre post the vertical post is continuous and the horizontal one has been welded to it. Is there a simple way to remove this post?

The centre post supports the metal joist going across the outside posts. Removing it will affect the structural integrity of the carport and could cause it to collapse. If you are wondering what tools to use, it will require a demolition hammer and a grinder with a steel cutting blade. But before you begin, I suggest engaging the services of an engineer and asking them to draw a proper plan on what needs to be modified if the centre post was to be removed.

I also suggest checking with your local council in regards to the rules and regulations in regards to the modification of your carport. There is a possibility that a permit might be required for this type of modification.

Basically the reason the centre posts are there are exactly as @EricL described. Often with an all timber construction, other parts can be supported in order to replace and/or modify other sections. As your carport is all steel sections welded together combined with concrete pillars and a tiled roof, it's not a viable option. It would be cheaper and easier for it to be demolished and a more suitable open double carport replace it. You could take the opportunity to build in part or all walls with a garage door for added weather protection and security. So semi garage.

All this would need a building and possibly a planning permit as well as a registered builder to do the works.
