How to build a low-level deck over tiles?

Hi,

I read the guide on how to build a low level deck and I have some questions for my build.

I am working with a height of around 110cm. Is this too low of a level for a low level deck? The area I'm building on is currently tiled so I'm not sure if drilling in brackets is a good idea.

The area is roughly 7m wide by 2.6m deep. It is surrounded on 3 sides by brickwork which I am thinking of fixing a 75mm bearer to. Is the bearer size too small as I've looked on the span tables and its classified as not suitable.

Your expertise would be much appreciated.

Mate there is no way you would build up in height over the tiled surface. The work you are proposing would cover the weep holes to your building and provide an access "bridging point" for termite infestation and damage to the timber structure and finishes in your residence. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news mate but you are better off finding out now than 12 months later when you have termite damage.

Technically there would be very little space left under your low-level deck if you were using 90x45 and standard 19mm decking panels. Joined together it would occupy a space of 109mm leaving you with an 11mm gap under the deck. It is very likely that moisture would get trapped under the deck and reduce the lifespan of your decking framing. That said, I suggest looking at this featured project - Low-level composite deck over concrete and soil by @oninpena. It's just to give you an idea of how it can be built. This decking frame is technically free standing and is not linked to the house.

As an alternative, I suggest looking at using Dekart 300 x 300 x 22mm Modular Decking Tiles. Deck tiles offer a quick, tool-free solution for upgrading any patio, balcony, rooftop, or outdoor area.
