Does artificial grass base need compacting?

Hi,

I am installing an artificial grass on my backyard through a local landscaping company. It’s a new place, so the base is sand. Now the workers have laid upper base of cracker dust without watering and compacting the bottom sand base. Lawn is not installed yet. So, urgently wanted to ask and check if this will overtime result in shifting, wrinkling and overall affect the durability. If I can get a quick then it would be extremely helpful.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your artificial turf installation.

Technically if the surface is not compacted then there is the possibility that the substrate underneath will shift over time. However, I suggest speaking to your installer and asking them about compaction and why they did not do it to the base surface. I don't wish to second guess your installer as they might have their reasons or technique for installing it in that manner. But I think its safe to ask your installer these questions so you don't have to worry about the installation.

I would be hitting up the installer and asking them the questions first. I find it far better to go to the source first and then ask around. I have not had any experience with artificial grass installs other then arguing over wether the grass in a picture is real or fake I am afraid 🙂

I suspect that the installer has a reason behind the way they have laid the material, would be interesting to find out why if when you talk to them and they tell you.

I think as long as they have levelled and compacted the top layer, then all should be fine. If in doubt check with them they are the professional installers and assume know what they are doing including warranty of workmanship.
