How to install groove panels on kitchen island, doors and drawers?

Hello,

I want to upcycle/resurface the existing kitchen island, doors and drawers to this groove kitchen.

I am thinking about using the Porta 84x12mm 2.7m White Primed Pine Portaline Dune and Selleys 350g Heavy Duty Liquid Nails.

1. Is 12mm too thick to wrap around the island, glue on the doors and drawers?

2. What paint do you recommend?

Thanks for sharing your question about installing Porta 84x12mm 2.7m White Primed Pine Portaline Dune in front of your kitchen doors. The weight that will be added to the doors is almost equivalent to adding an extra door in front of the existing door. For a while the hinges might be able to carry this extra weight, but eventually the hinges will give way due to the weight added. One possible way around it is to build your own doors using a thin panel and adding the Portaline in front of it so that it is equivalent to the size and weight of the original door.

Unfortunately what you're proposing isn't possible for anything other than the wrap around the island bench.

You can't add layers to the doors or drawers because simply they wouldn't operate. Cheapest option would be to spray-paint the facia's, but then there is the long term durability. If you want a sustainable face lift, then replacing the doors and drawer faces and change the handles will provide that.

I have had the same thought as you in "stepping up" my kitchen and also hallway doors. 🙂

Some thoughts

- The added weight to the doors and drawers will be high, as @EricL mentions it may work for awhile but then there will be issues with hinges staying fixed and carrying the extra load.

- Movement of the doors and drawers, As @Nailbag mentions you will run into issues with opening angles and pinch points in particular.

I have just redone my foyer and had similar thoughts. The old piano hinge for joining the bifold doors was my decision point to not add too much weight to the doors, however I thought of timber trim on the doors instead. Then when I went to install the trim those pinch points showed their heads 🙂 So that was a Nope.

Trim on your doors could work, just not bifolds. So you could make a patten and then liquid nail it to the door, tho the weight is the issue.

Replacing the actual doors only, thats an option. If they are Kaboodle or other brand even easier. If not then a kitchen manufacturer should be able to make doors that you want easily enough. The doors look like they are not vaccum sealed so definently I wouldnt be adding weight to them (Just zoomed in on the edges) I would be tempted to go to a kitchen place (or special orders at Bunnings) to enquire about doors plus trim for the existing cabinetry

Apart from that a textured paint and new trim would give a new life to the cupboards. My foyer went from a yellowish adged cream to a deep black with a timber top and timber trim. (Will post the project soon)

What paint can I use to spray paint the facia's drawers and doors? I have Wagner W 950 spray gun but I've never sprayed paint before. Appreciate some tips on this.

What products do you recommend for doors and drawers' faces replacement?

Hi @Beginner20,

The Dulux Renovation Range can be sprayed. Remember to dilute as per the instructions on the product. Bets to remove the drawer fronts if possible and set them all up outside or even better in a garage with no wind or dust; just ensure it is well ventilated.

For the corner cabinets, which hinges were you looking for? The one between the two door panels or the one that fixes the doors to the cabinet?

@MitchellMc beat me to the punch with exactly the product I would be recommended. It's designed for that exact purpose, doesn't require priming and is water-based.

What will be extremely important is the recommended prep and application to ensure the paint adheres successfully and with a beautiful smooth finish. Though you can use your spray-gun, I personally wouldn't. There is simply too much room for error with evenness of coating, the chance it splatters as it runs out of paint and having to dilute the paint, thus reducing its properties. I would follow the manual method of roller and fine-haired brush to lay it off. This is the exact method I have used on high-gloss enamel painted doors. And don't be tempted to try and even off any brush strokes, just trust that the paint will blend during the drying process.

I'm assuming the door left of the drawers opens and there are hinges missing to connect that to the missing door? If so, there are a few variations available like this one that open to varying degrees.

If you can confirm if this is how the door/s should operate @MitchellMc or @EricL maybe able to be more specific.

These hinges should work for the hinge set.

The drawer runners will be more challenging. Though HARN cabintery products are readily available, their Triomax runners are not. At least in Australia these days. Then there are different lengths and heights etc to deal with. You could call this company for their advice.

Failing that, it is possible to modify the drawers to accomodate a more readily available runner system like Hafele, which are available through Bunnings. I have had a similar issue when replacing a couple of faulty drawer runners with another brand. The modification is typically a more advanced skill-level process. Unless @MitchellMc has any ideas, I would be having the drawers professionally done by a local cabinet-maker. Just get a few quotes. They may may say, keep the fronts and replace the rest of the drawers as a cheaper alternative to modification.

These Kaboodle hinges should be suitable for your cabinet. However, if you still have the hinges, it's best to take them with you into a store to match up exactly.

Regarding the runners, as @Nailbag mentioned, it might be best to replace them entirely with runners available off the shelf. If you are not confident in their replacement, it would be best to enlist a professional for installation.
