How to install a glass splashback over tiles?

Hello,

I'd like to give these black splashback tiles in the kitchen a makeover with a small budget and without removing the existing tiles. I am tossing between these 4 options:

1. Paint the tiles white

2. Paint the tiles white and create a faux marble. This video was made by an American and she used her own paint brand and glazing. Do you know what alternative paints and glazing products I could buy?

3. Install a glass splashback on top of the existing black tiles. How to cut the glass splashback to fit the existing tiles?

4. Install an acrylic splashback on top of the existing black tiles.

Atm, I am leaning more towards option 2 and 3 for better looks but happy to hear your thoughts on kitchen makeover with budget 🙂

Painting the tiles white would be the most expedient and safe upgrade you can do. If the wall tiles are prepared properly, you should get a great looking finish on the tile surface. In regards to creating a faux marble top, you can technically attempt it, but it would be at your own risk. The Dulux Renovation range has a set time to work in and can't be left out in the open too long. Mixing and matching Dulux Renovation paint colours is also not recommended as the results could be unpredictable if you used the faux technique on the video you linked to. Using ordinary paint will not work on tiled surfaces.       

The glass splash back can't be cut on site and must be done at the factory as it is made of tempered glass. It would be best to remove the tiles as shadows will sometimes form behind the glass making the tiles colour visible. Installing over tiles also not recommended as the gaps between the tiles serve as a breeding ground for mould and mildew as moisture gets trapped behind the glass. The same issue also affects acrylic splash backs.  I don't recommend installing either glass or acrylic over the tile surface. My best advice is to remove the tiles should you decide to install either glass or an acrylic splash back.
