How to replace part of shower floor tiles?

Hi guys

I'm revisiting shower floor remodelling ideas. One of our showers is a curbless open shower. The rest of the bathroom has a bathtub and vanity+walkway. To contain water within the shower area, I'm considering a shower tray. One contractor suggested replacing floor tiles of shower area & the bottom row of wall tiles rather than ripping out all floor tiles of entire bathroom. I'm just wondering when they install new waterproof membrane before replacing the tiles, how would they be able to overlap with the old membrane of the rest of the bathroom area?

Thanks for sharing your question in regards to your shower revamp. When tiles are removed from your shower area it is very likely that it will strip the water proofing with it. Waterproofing when applied must be a single homogenous layer and can't be overlapped with an older layer. This is because the old and new waterproofing will not bind together, and water will pass through that overlap causing damage underneath it. If the tiles are removed the rest of the tiles in the room must be removed as well as a new layer of waterproofing must be applied to the whole area.

I propose engaging the services of a waterproofing agent and getting a quote for the service.
