How to extend a thin internal wall?

Hi! I am wanting to extend this internal wall out to close of an area of the home but the trouble I am having is that the current wall thickness is only 100mm. I can only seem to find framing timber in 70mm or 90mm thickness and gyprock sheets only in 10mm thickness which would then not match up to thickness of the current wall. Any tips or tricks on how I can make this work?

Hi @ashleyj,

That's an interesting size they've managed to achieve. You might like to remove the plaster from the face of the wall to check what size timber and plaster sheets they've used. The closest I could get to 100mm would be a 70mm stud and a sheet of 13mm plasterboard on both sides. That would give you a thickness of 96mm, 4mm off your desired width. If the 70mm stud is centred, then there would be a discrepancy of 2mm on either side, which you can address by applying a skim coat of plaster over the join to blend in.

That does not look like timber at the top of the wall, What is the wall made of? When you tap on the wall does it sound hollow or solid?

Do you think it is possible that if you use adhesive to stick the plasterboard on, you could gain that 2mm on either side due to the thickness of the adhesive?

Edited to add, using 70mm timber and 10mm plasterboard, you could double sheet one side to achieve 100mm thickness.

The adhesive would add some thickness @R4addZ, good point.

Double sheeting wouldn't be a bad idea.
