How to install balcony privacy screen?

I would like to install some kind of privacy screen along the far side (short side) of my balcony wall. My original idea was to use something like lattice makers mahogany oriental timber screen, 

 

However the length of useable wall (accounting for gas pipe) is 160cm. And the screen can be no taller than 160cm high. My question is - can I cut that timber screen to size or will it ruin the integrity of it? Ie use two at 160x80 each.

 

Additionally I cannot damage the brick wall in any way. So I had planned to use large heavy rectangular planters  to hold them against the wall.

 

I am a complete diy novice so any advice or other ideas are greatly appreciated!

Yes, it should be absolutely fine to cut the timber screen down to suit your space. You can trim the horizontal supports between the slats to adjust the height or width. If you need to remove a couple of slats, simply cut through the rear supports behind them with a hand saw — doing so won’t compromise the integrity of the rest of the screen, as long as you keep the majority of the frame intact.

Using large, heavy rectangular planters to hold the screens in place without fixing into the brickwork is a clever idea and should work well, especially if the planters are weighted or filled with soil and plants. Just be mindful of one important safety consideration: on balconies, especially if there are children around, it’s essential not to create unintended footholds that could allow someone to climb over the balcony edge. Take a moment to assess whether your planters and screens might provide climbable access, and if needed, consider spacing the planters away from the side you're not screening.
