Best paint for spray painting old Queenslander POP design ceiling?

We are painting our new 100yr old queenslander and have fixed all the cracks in the ceiling and sanded and washed it down. Since it has the pop design it would be a pain too roll it (also 3.4m high!), too many edges. I would like to engage my trusty spray painter. What celing paint do you recommend for my airless spray painter The celiing is white already and doesn't have too many imperfections and fixed the cracks with paintable filler (cheapest brand I could get at Bunnings ;), so dont think I need a primer/undercoat. We have got a first undercoat (Dulux 1 step primer) on the walls (there is a scheme of at least 3 darker colours in each room, all different), so now it's time to get the ceilings done before further work on the walls and trims is completed.

I would like to engage my trusty spray painter. What celing paint do you recommend for an airless spray painter?

Hi @Madelon,

Thank you for your question about painting the ceiling of your home.

Start by giving the ceiling a good clean with sugar soap to remove any contaminants that could affect adhesion.

If you've only made small repairs to the ceiling with your filler, then you should be fine to just paint over them, but if there are substantial amounts of filler over the ceiling, then it is certainly worth applying some undercoat to them as paint won't adhere to powdery fillers particularly well on its own. Considering you already have some Dulux 1Step Prep Primer, Sealer & Undercoat, this would be fine to use if necessary.

You can then use any Ceiling Paint, ensuring you follow the instructions on the packaging closely. They can usually be thinned out before application so they will work better with a sprayer. There will usually be instructions on the packaging, for example Dulux Ceiling White Paint can be thinned by adding up to 5% water.

Hi thank you so much! It went great - we spray painted ceilings in 4 rooms and they look great! Was so easy.

Another question for you- not sure if I should start a new thread?

But anyway, in one of the rooms one of the wall trims were gold painted, the trims all got 2 layers of undercoat (sprayed) on them, but now I've got a strange 'blue hue' leaking through the coats...I have attached some photos.

I will be painting the trims a gloss Dulux vivid white... What do you think is going on and how can I combat it ruining my trim paint job?

Hello @Madelon

It is difficult to tell what could be causing the blue tinge on top of your handywork. I suggest sanding the surface back to plain timber and removing any paint that was originally there. It's possible that the sealer is having a chemical reaction with the gold paint that was originally there. If the paint is removed it should hopefully eliminate the blue tinge. I suggest testing a short run and putting primer on top of it again. If it disappears then its the paint reacting with the primer, but if it reappears then it's possible that kerosene was used in one of the original paint products and is reacting with the primer.
