How to avoid mould in shower glass corners?

Hi There,

Need your advice.

Mould is forming regularly in my Shower Glass corners which you can see it in the pictures. fyi, my bathroom doesn't have windows. so far, I remove the sealant and fill with 'Selleys 300g Clear Wet Area Silicone' when required.

Is there any permanent solution?

The 'Mould Remover' spray is not working in that area 🙁

Hi @rvkiruba,

Thank you for your question about how to manage mould in behind your silicone.

Unfortunately, once mould gets in behind your silicone, which is likely the reason it is reappearing, it is tough to get rid of.

I'd suggest removing the silicone that is there and spraying a good amount of Rapid Mould Killer Remover in the gaps between the tiles, allowing it to sit for some time before flushing with clean water.

Once the mould in the gap has been treated and it has dried, you can reapply the silicone to the corners.

Unfortunately, if there is a bigger mould issue happening beneath the tiles, which is causing it to regrow at the corners of the shower, then I am not aware of a method of treating that mould without stripping out the tiles, treating the mould and then relaying the tiles.

With no windows it makes it a little hard to get rid of the moisture in the bathroom, mine is the same. Tho I have an ceiling exhaust fan that I keep running for 20ish mins after I finish showering. I also use a 50/50 sprayed solution of bleach and water. Please note that it is very strong and can cause sealants (Silastic) to perish. Also make sure you rinse the spray bottle as the bleach will eat the plastic components. 😲

This is how I keep the shower from building up mould. You could try this and if it dosnt work then go down the route of @JacobZ 's suggestion and try the bleach spray again as needed.

This is a property maintenance job I see a lot and unfortunately once mould is behind the silicone, mould treatment will not work. It simply needs to be removed and replaced.

It's best to do this when the shower hasn't been used for 24hrs to allow the area to be completely dry. Then remove the silicone completely and clean the area with turps. Check within the tile cavity there is no moisture as it needs to be 100% dry before the new silicone is applied or it won't take. Plus, mould can reform if not fully dried. Then you can apply a suitable coloured wet-area mould inhibiting silicone and allow another 24hrs before using the shower.

Yes we do have Ceiling fan and we turn it during shower and after too. But, still it gets mould and growing.

I bought a mould remover product called 'home heros' and it works very well for tile silicone. But doens't work for the fram silicone 🙁

I do the same steps. plus, I too tried with 30sec mould remover. But it doesn't work in that area.

I can only suggest seriously thinking about installing an exhaust fan if possible. Either an IXL Tastic Mirage 3 In 1 Bathroom Heater Exhaust Fan And Motion Sensor LED or a HPM 100mm Square Slimline Wall Exhaust Fan. This should reduce the heavy moisture trapped in the bathroom.
