How to treat rose losing leaves?

For many years, first time suddenly I notice one of my standard rose with lots of green leaves falling off to the ground (see photos

), while the other rose on the far left has no problem. Is it attacked by .......? Very strange. I intend to do Winter pruning at end of June or early July as every year.

Is there growth below the bud union on the stem.

If there is it will be the host plant which would be some variety of bush rose, which would need to be removed.

If you are in a cold area rose's would be at the end of their cycle at this time of the year, anyway.

It could be black spot which is prevalent on roses at this time of year as well.

I wouldn't worry too much as you will be pruning shortly and when the new growth emerges keep an eye out for aphid and any other bugs that love new growth.

Don't forget to feed them wellas we move towards Spring and the warmer months.

Good Morning @MYC Welcome to the Workshop Community and thank you for sharing your question regarding you Rose and also including photos to help us identify the problem. It's great to see @bergs has given great advice.

Now , this is just my opinion from what I can see and I am going to tag @Noelle into this post as I would like her to have a look as well.

The stems where there are no leaves look like there are leaves BUT extremely distorted. Now , that too me looks like insect damage and infestation from Chilli Thrips. May I ask what State your in ? I'm in Perth and I am just asking because here in Perth , Chilli Thrip has been destructive throughout the suburbs. Now treatment wise , you should be able to fix it , if you get straight onto it. Chilli Thrips and Thrips in general are tiny insects that attack a plant , rasp and suck the life out of it and this causes the leaves to shrivel up and become distorted , along with the new leaves and buds trying to grow , they are also distorted.

Thrips are highly active throughout the warmer months. , infestation will kill the plant and they spread throughout the garden if not treated.

Treatment - First of all , cut back your rose and dispose of it in a plastic bag and put it in your general waste bin, not in the compost and also pick up all the fallen leaves ect on the ground.This is extremely important.

Then thoroughly spray them ( all of your roses ) with a product that is an insecticidal soap called Natrasoap which is good for this treatment. Eco Neem Oil and Success Ultra are also good and works well when they are alternated regularly. It is highly important to follow the application instructions on the products bottle and also to make sure you wear protective clothing including gloves and mask whilst you are spraying an insecticide.

I hope this isn't information overload for you @MYC , just trying to help you and other gardeners who may have the same problem in their gardens. 🙂

Could I just add it may have been over fertilised and burnt , could have been hit with a chemical from wind drift , could be something wrong with the soil. It will be great to get more advice from our Community Members 🙂

Ill just add that when you do prune your roses back for Winter , it helps to spray them with Lime sulphur as this is a fungicide and a miticide that will protect your Roses in the Winter months as they are dormant. It is only used in Winter.

Depending on your location, it certainly looks like insect damage of some sort. Chilli thrips are not, to my knowledge, a problem on the east coast for example, but other thrips, sap-suckers (aphids) and caterpillars are capable of doing much the same sort of damage. An insecticidal; spray now followed by pruning before mid July (and disposal of the prunings wrapped in plastic and put into the household rubbish) would be beneficial regardless of the pest.

The fungicidal treatment after pruning is also important to reduce the number of over-wintering fungal spores on your plant - there is some evidence of black spot on one or two of the leaves.

Thank you SO MUCH for all of your advices and diagonisis of my rose leaves. I live in East Melbourne, Victoria. Never heard of Chilli Thrips before, and never experience of seeing healthy leaves falling off to the ground. Only happened since the cold Winter starts in June. Yes, I will follow every advice of everyone of you have been so kind to help me. I have putting all the suggestions together, and will act accordingly. Hopefully my standard rose of 25 years survive through this Winter. Will let you know any update of this issue. I am extremely grateful to everyone of you at this Bunnings Workshop Community, always available to solve whatever problems I can't solve. Many thanks.

You’re welcome @MYC That is why I asked you what state you live in. Chilli Thrips are bad in WA. Thrips in general are not good either, wherever you live. Good luck and keep in touch when you can 😃
