How to fix door trim?

Gday team,

Another one for everyone, I've got a front door with a massive gap between the internal wall and the door architrave (door trim) also gap between the flooring and the trim.

Do I take it off and use a fixing gun to make it flush although it is flush at the top... Or would I be better off using filler? Any help would be great 😃

I'm struggling to understand exactly what is going on. Is it possible to get some photos from further back showing the architraves

The gap at the bottom appears to be from the trim being pulled away from the wall. This would be fairly easy to fix with a fixing gun. Just shoot a few brad nails through the timber to pull it back tight against the wall. There's no need to take it off to do this.

Once it is tight against the wall, just run a bead of No More Gaps to seal the line between the architrave and the plasterboard.

The gap to the floor is the main problem that will be a bit trickier, as it is a fairly significant gap, and you have unpainted timber, which would be tough to emulate.

What does the architrave look like at the top of the door frame? Is there any way you could bring it down a tiny bit?

Perhaps you could cut a block of Pine DAR in the same profile as the architrave, slip it into the gap and then shoot it in place with the fixing gun. You could then use a stain to try to emulate the look of the existing architrave.

Thanks for that to be honest I have no clue what the previous owners have done but I've been fixing / attempting to fix over the past year 😊. I've taken a photo as best I could but I'm not sure it'll help

Timely question as I just had to resolve a similar scenario but on an internal wall door arc. On one side I had to use this trim ass the gap varied from 5mm to 10mm. The other side and bottom I used gap filler such as what @JacobZ suggested. It to was a decent gap but the trim wouldn't work. I filled the gap and then used a flat filler knife square to the wall and ran the excess off. Once cured I did it again due to some shrinkage.

If your gaps are noticeably visible to the eye I would go a Tassie oak quad.

It looks like they've undercut the architraves to install floating floorboards, and they've taken off much more than they really should have.

As I mentioned, shooting some brad nails through the architrave into the frame should pull it back tight against the wall.

At the floor level, you will need to put a filler piece or a trim such as the Tassie Oak Quad that @Nailbag has mentioned.

The other alternative is replacing the architrave altogether, which, if you can match up the timber, would give the best finish.
