How to treat struggling magnolia teddy bear?

Hi,

Recently this magnolia teddy bear began struggling and I could use some advice. There is one next to it near where I’m standing that is doing ok. I’m not sure whether it has gotten too wet in winter or if you zoom in on certain leaves there are spots, maybe it’s a disease and could use something like liquid copper? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Your Magnolia ‘Teddy Bear’ appears to be under stress, and based on the image and your description, there are likely a few contributing factors. Environmental conditions such as excessive winter moisture and limited airflow seem to be the primary concerns, although a fungal or bacterial issue could also be playing a role.

Magnolias, especially the 'Teddy Bear' variety, are sensitive to both overwatering and poor drainage. If the soil in that area retains water or drains slowly, particularly during wetter months, the roots might be sitting in overly saturated soil. This can cause root stress or even root rot, which would manifest in symptoms like leaf yellowing, browning, or drop. You can check the soil moisture by digging about ten to fifteen centimetres below the surface. If it remains wet for long periods, it may be worth improving drainage or mounding the soil around the base slightly to help it dry out more efficiently. Additionally, reassess any irrigation to ensure the plant isn’t being watered unnecessarily during the cooler months.

The leaf spots visible in your image suggest a potential fungal or bacterial issue. This is common in magnolias when airflow is restricted or the foliage remains wet for extended periods. These conditions allow diseases like anthracnose or bacterial leaf spot to spread. If you suspect this is the case, removing affected leaves and pruning out congested branches to improve air circulation would be beneficial. Applying a liquid copper spray such as -Yates 200ml Liquid Copper Fungicide can help, particularly for fungal or bacterial infections, but it should be done carefully. Be sure to follow label instructions, apply during dry weather in the early morning, and avoid overuse, as copper can accumulate in the soil and disrupt beneficial microorganisms.

It’s also important to compare the light and airflow conditions between this struggling magnolia and the healthier one nearby. If this plant is in a tighter corner with less sunlight or breeze, it may be more susceptible to disease due to the reduced ability for the foliage to dry out. Pruning back surrounding vegetation or structures that restrict air movement can make a noticeable difference.

The presence of the large nearby tree may also be a factor. If it has an established root system, it could be competing for water and nutrients, making it harder for the magnolia to thrive. The stress from this competition could exacerbate symptoms, especially if the magnolia is younger or recently planted.

Going forward, monitor the soil regularly to keep moisture levels in check, prune any affected or crowded growth, and consider using a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support recovery. Lightly mulching around the base can help regulate moisture, but ensure the mulch does not touch the trunk. If conditions do not improve after these steps, a more in-depth root inspection or a soil test could be useful in diagnosing underlying issues.
