How to fix line between plasterboard panels?

 Hi there!

I have always hated this weird line in my kitchen and it really takes away from the space. Want to know how I can fix it myself or what kind of tradesman I can find if it’s a bigger job than DIY. Would also love to know how this happened and what it is.

It appears that repairs were attempted by the former owner as the shadows of overlapping filler can be seen crossing over the panel join. 

Generally speaking, the repair procedure will be to sand the surface flat. Plaster filler will then need to be applied followed by Gyprock CSR 75m Plasterboard Perforated Paper Jointing Tape and then covered again with plaster filler. You'll need to use a Hyde 152mm Plaster Joint Knife Tool with Hammerhead to uniformly apply the plaster compound on the surface. Once the plaster cures the surface will need to sanded down perfectly to get a flat even finish. When the sanding has been finished the ceiling surface needs to be wiped down in preparation for painting.

The ceilings plaster panels are attached to a timber frame and movement of the frame will sometimes move the panels in different directions causing the joins to split apart. Another possibility is that the house is settling and is affecting the framework of the ceiling. These movements have a direct effect on the joins of the ceiling panels either moving them apart or pushing them together.

If you've not done large scale plaster repair before, I suggest engaging the services of a plastering professional as they will be able to do this type of repair in a short amount of time with a professional finish.
