How to attach lights to flat metal roofing?

So..I have a Flat roofed Carport that I would like to add some LED Battens too.

Downside there isn't any thing to attach them too..

However I just want to see if I am over thinking it or right on track.

Step one Place the Battens on the roof and space them out to provide good coverage. Mark the locations and Drill holes accordingly.

Step two Chop up some timber blocking to attach the lights to. Using a teck / roofing screw attach the blocks on the underside of the roof. Also adding some extra silicone to ensure a watertight hole.

Step three attach the lights to the timber and then Bingo bango lights are installed.

Right on track, or over thinking it?

Hi @Pugs,

The basic idea sounds correct, but I'd have to see what you are working with to be confident it is a suitable installation method.

Typically, you would want to attach any fixtures to a frame, rather than a roofing sheet, so you might need to install timbers that will span from the frame across the carport to the frame on the opposite side.

If you can upload some photos of your carport, I will be much better placed to recommend a solution.

As @JacobZ mentioned, the light battens would be fixed to timbers fixed to the sheets, spanning from thew left eve house facia across to the carport facia.

I assume you are installing lights with extension cords to a powerpoint or are you DIY'ing permanent cable runs to a light/switch/s? Obviously the later is illegal across all states and would void in house insurance in the unlikely event of the wiring causing damage or harm. In this case you would be best to install the timbers ready for a licensed sparky to install the lighting system

I will be getting a Sparky mate to do the wiring...he owes me a favour or two....

The Battens I have are prewired to a bare end

I am fully aware of all the legal aspects of Wiring...

Hi @Pugs,

Yeah, you're going to want to run some timbers across from the timber beam to the eave.

You could use some 70x35 framing with some angle brackets and timber screws to fix it in place.

This method will avoid any drilling into the roofing sheets which are not designed to support any weight.
