How to re-stain scratched timber floors?

Hi there,

My desk chair has been scratching my floor (I have now replaced and damage is no more).

I am wondering what would be the best way to repair that doesn’t break the bank? Thinking of re-staining the area but unsure which stain to purchase.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your timber floor.

Generally speaking, it will be difficult to match the stain on your timber floor as it has already faded and is no longer its original colour. You could try for a close match, but a spot on replacement will be very hard. The faded timber section will need to sanded down and the new stain painted on, it's a given that it will stand out, but in time it will fade and possibly blend in. Another option is to engage the services of a timber floor restoration specialist who might be able to patch the damaged section. The final option of course is to sand the entire floor down back to timber and restain the floor for a uniform finish.

One other option I almost forgot is that you can cover the area with a small rug or use a Smart Home Products 120 x 90cm Clear Heavy Duty Chair Mat For Hard Flooring which can disguise the damage.

Thanks Eric, do you have any idea which stain colour to use?

I am hoping because the floorboards are already not consistent the retaining these areas may not stick out as much?

I'm sorry but mobile phone images can't be used as a colour reference, they always shift in tone and becomes impossible to get a true colour match. I suggest visiting your local store and getting a few brochures from Feast Watson and Cabot's. The floor stain images could possibly match the one on your floor. I would also change the chair hard castors for soft castors.

Something like this:

Maybe Bunnings has something similar.

My older daughter works from home and uses this to protect the floor.
