How to paint kitchen cabinet doors?

Hi,

I have a very old kitchen which was put in 25 years ago. It has served its. Life span except the laminate is now starting to lift from cabinet doors and drawers. I received an email today from the Bunnings workshop displaying how cabinet doors and drawers can now be painted for a new look on an old kitchen. But do not know how or where to start. I will need some ideas and places I can visit who will be able to assist.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

You'd have to start by gluing any of the lifting laminate back down so that it is a stable surface. Check out How do you repair laminate that is coming off for some guidance.

Once the laminate is stable, you can use the Dulux Renovation Range Primer and Dulux Renovation Range Cabinet Paint to give your cabinets a bright new look.

Hi,

Thk you kindly for your reply. I would like to think I can undertake fixing the laminate that has started to lift and paint the cabinet doors and drawers, but I am not in a position to fix any jobs right now for health reasons. It sounds all too easy, but so hard for me to carry out in my present condition. it was suggested by another community member that using glue could also work, so I may give that a go and hopefully have my problem resolved.

however, more recently, I had a local electrical store deliver an oven as my old one died on me. Whilst removing the old oven, the guy chipped off a small bit of laminate on the bottom asper the pix attached. instead of passing it over to me, he threw all the rubbish into the garbage bin. So I have lost that bit. Pl refer uploaded pix. Can I paint that area rather than use a product to iron on as suggested by another member of the community with a laminated door problem. Pl advise.

Hi @Lori23,

I'm sorry to hear you haven't been well, but I hope you feel confident that you can carry out this project. It is relatively light work, so I think you'd be ok.

That chip wouldn't be too hard to fix, and considering your plan to paint the cabinets as well, it would be easy to blend it in quite nicely.

I would just grab some multipurpose filler such as this UNi-PRO Multi Purpose Interior Filler, give it a good mix, then apply it with a Pro Renovator Plastic Scraper, doing your best to make it smooth.

Once dry, give it a sand with a sanding sponge to smooth it out, then give it a brush to remove any powder dust before painting.

Hi Jacob,

Sorry for the delay in replying. As I explained to you earlier, due to my health condition, I have to take care of appts I have during a week, and it makes life very difficult in co-ordinating emails I receive, which pile up.

Anyway, I want to thank you for the advice provided on how I can fix the chipped laminated area with a filler, then apply with a scraper and sand smooth thereafter. Do I then have to paint that tiny area? It is not hard for me to do.

Except the sanding back of my kitchen drawers and cabinet doors. At the moment I am unable to carry out this task and will ask friends who may know a handyman interested in such a job. Does bunnings kitchen section assist in this type of work?

With the small section that would be filled and sanded back, you would need to paint it to seal the filler and give everything a uniform look.

Thks for your reply and pointing me in the right direction of who I can contact at your special orders desk - services marketplace. I will try and visit your store in Thornleigh to make further enquiries.

I have another question for you - it’s an old pot plant table that I’ve had for many, many years and the top was fitted with green bathroom tiles. They were very pretty to look at, a first, but over the years have lost their lustre and I am wanting to get the top re-done as the tiles have cracked and need replacing.

The size of the table is 61 cms length x 46cms width. There is no base under the tiles apart from metal strips - (the same height as the width) which are placed at a distance a little shorter than the size of the tiles so it acts as a bed to support the tiles on these metal strips.

The table normally sits on my balcony and I would like to remove the tiles so I can have an all weather base. But once again I will have to sand back the metal frame as it has corrosive residue which has built up over time.

Can you pl suggest an easy way of getting the top re-done. Idid think of mosaic, but I’m not sure if it’s too fiddly. With tiles I may be able to glue it back on with tile cement. Any easy ideas would be very welcome

I propose removing the tiles and sanding your table to remove all the rust particles that have accumulated on the surface of your steel frame. Once all the rust has been removed I suggest using a spirit level on the metal strips to see if they can still be arranged and levelled using a mallet. However, if the steel strips are too stubborn and can't be adjusted properly, I recommend covering the surface with a timber panel such as marine plywood.

But before doing that step, I suggest treating the steel table with White Knight Rust Guard painting system. The paint system starts with the cleaner/rust converter, followed by the primer then the topcoat. You can then place the timber panel on the table and fix it in place using screws and adhesive. Make sure that the panel is level and is not tilting on the metal strips.

In regards to tiling, I suggest having a look at this discussion - Upcycled mosaic tile table by @lifestylebymari. This is an excellent example of how to retile the surface of your tiled table.
