Can you use Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen indoors?

Hello. I’m planning on painting my laminate kitchen cupboards in a specific Dulux green colour. I cannot use the Dulux Renovation range, as it doesn’t come in the yellow base colour needed to create the green. After discussions in-store, it was decided my best option is to use the Dulux Precision Primer and green paint over the top. I’ve used Dulux Precision Primer on laminate shelves and it is a great product, so I’m happy with that option.

 

However, today I went to get the green paint in a semi gloss, only to find out that the Dulux Aquanamel Semi Gloss also doesn’t come in the yellow base colour needed for this colour - which is really disappointing. The only Aquanamel with the yellow base available is high gloss, or I could use a regular acrylic matte paint but that would require extra coat of semi gloss over the top. And the other paint brands had the same issue.

 

One of the very helpful team members suggested using Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen (exterior paint) instead, as it’s the closest match to semi gloss and doesn’t need a top coat. I agree this sounds like the best option and I’ve now bought the Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen in the desired green colour, but I’ve since read online that using outdoor paint for indoors isn’t recommended due to the chemicals. I rang Dulux directly and was told it is safe to use Weathershield paint indoors. However, I’ve also read online that another person was told the opposite when they called Dulux with the same question, so now I’m feeling unsure.

 

Can anyone offer further insight? And has anyone else had to use Dulux Weathershield inside, especially in a kitchen, because of the lacking base colours in their other paint ranges? I’d really appreciate any insight or experience you can share!

Using Dulux Weathershield indoors, is generally considered safe, though it’s not the standard recommendation. Weathershield is a water-based exterior-grade paint that is relatively low in VOCs. While it’s engineered for outdoor durability, it doesn’t contain any particularly harmful chemicals that would make it dangerous for indoor use, especially when used in small areas with adequate ventilation. Since Dulux confirmed to you directly that it's safe for interior use, you can feel reasonably confident in proceeding.

Since you’re using Dulux Precision Primer, which is specifically made to adhere to surfaces like laminate, you've already taken the most important step to ensure long-lasting adhesion. Allow the primer to cure fully before applying the topcoat and be sure to let the Weathershield coats dry and cure properly as well. This will help improve durability and resistance to chips or peeling. If you’re concerned about the long-term wear of the painted surface, you might consider applying a clear, water-based polyurethane topcoat for added protection, though that may increase the sheen slightly.

In summary, while Dulux Weathershield isn’t marketed for interior use and in regular circumstances shouldn't be used, Dulux have confirmed it is safe to use in your situation and can perform well with proper preparation and curing. Just ensure your application space is well-ventilated and follow all drying times carefully to get the best result.
