Is it possible to limewash an internal schist wall? The schist is quite an orangey hue. Would painting be better?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your internal wall.
From my perspective this would be a two-step project. First the wall has to be painted to provide a neutral base for your plan on limewashing the surface. Once the wall has been painted a neutral colour or the colour of your choice, you can then plan on what colour combination to use to get the limewash effect you are trying to achieve. I propose using Dulux 1L PRECISION White Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer on the tiled surface. For the topcoat, I recommend looking at Dulux Wash&Wear in low sheen or matt finish.
If you are successful with the limewashing you will truly have a unique wall finish. Not only is it limewashed but it has the distinct quality of having an irregular surface that gives it a very organic feel.
