Finished Merbau Bench Seat

I searched everywhere online but could not find any designs or how to’s for a bench seat for a Corten steel planter box.  In the end, I designed something myself.

Materials

42mm x 42mm x 2.7m pre-oiled Merbau lengths

Tools

Ryobi sliding drop saw

Ryobi hammer frill

Eyobi compact drill

Ryobi orbital sander 

Clamps x 2 - essential

Ryobi nail gun

Exterior wood glue

Exterior 75mm timber fixings

Steps

Step 1

Measuring up

Drawing it up.  I ended up going with a sub-frame design for strength.

Step 3

i lay out the cut lengths with spacers to estimate the correct number of lengths for the seat.

Step 4

I cut then assembled the sub frame

Step 5

Each lap joint is glued, pre-drilled and then screwed together for additional structural strength.

Step 6

The sub-frame is then attached to the lengths using spacers and the clamps.

Step 7

The final bench seat is then sanded and sealer applied.  The seat is then dropped into the planter box which hides the subframe.
