How to remove security door lock?

My front security door accidentally got locked, and I can’t open it with my keys. I tried locking and unlocking it several times, but it didn’t work.

I removed the door handles and most of the hardware, but I still can’t get the door open. I also tried to remove the lock cylinder, but I couldn’t get it out.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

sounds like there is a substantial failure within the latch. If using the key doesn’t work, I have had to drill out the cylinder. Not an easy task. I works get a locksmith in.

Unfortunately, I think @Nailbag is on the money here.

To get the cylinder out without destructive measures, you need access to the face of the door to remove a retaining pin. With the door being locked and unopenable, this isn't possible.

If you have a decent drill, you could grab a cobalt drill bit and attempt to drill out the cylinder, but this is not exactly easy.

I also think contacting a locksmith is probably the best way to go.

I would start with a 4mm bit like this Sutton Viper. Though @JacobZ recommendation of a cobalt coated one is excellent, I find in this type of application the coating will wear off relatively quickly thus turning it into a standard bit at double the cost. I have been very impressed with the standard Viper bits durability over any other bits and have been slowly replacing my old bits as they break or wear.

Go dead centre of the keyhole on high-speed but not too much pressure. Expect the bit may jamb as you go deeper. Regularly pull the bit out and allow it too cool for a little bit so it doesn't over heat. Then one through you need to get a bit more aggressive with a 7mm drill bit and start to twist the tip around inside the cylinder to essentially grind out all the bits inside.

It's not an easy job, but it the only way I have ever been able to get the entire latch out. If you end up unsuccessful you could then get a locksmith in or just get one to quote you first and see if thats a preferred option for you.

I drilled into the lock cylinder, but the lock still wouldn’t open. So I made the hole bigger and took out all the tiny parts inside. After 30 minutes of fiddling, I finally got the door open — and I can see the front yard again! What a relief! 😅🔓

thats awesome news and all sounds about right in terms of effort and time frame. Plus you would have saved a lot of money in getting a locksmith in.

A replacing the old with a new handle lock is easy diy project to 👏
