A built-in bedhead built using recycled timber beams for the frame and clad with shiplap panels.
The project
My wife has wanted a bed head for a while now and after a trip to the tip, I found a bunch of long wooden beams full of nails that I ended up taking home. I used the grinder to get rid of the nails.
Steps
Step 1
Mark out the size and shape with tape and start attaching wooden frame on the studs.
Step 2
Start building the frame - the challenge was making the holes to act as bedside tables. Finding this wood at the tip was awesome and saved a good chunk of money.
Step 3
Getting the holes framed was a challenge - lots of measuring and re-measuring, especially to get both sides to be exactly the same.
Step 4
We wrote messages and drew pictures for any future renovators after we are long gone.
Step 5
I covered the whole thing with Gyprock, a step I probably didn’t need to do, but I’ve never done this before. Luckily Gyprock sheets aren’t that expensive but still added more work than needed.
Step 6
Added shiplap from Bunnings and made sure the fit was good - again, measuring about five times to cut once.
Step 7
Painting is fun with a 3-year-old wanting to be involved.
Step 8
After painting, I didn’t like the edging, wasn’t sure how to make it pop and look good, so I used some curved edging wood trim which worked well! I used clear silicone to glue it into place, if it oozed out it wouldn’t be visible and it could be easily cut off.
Step 9
Done. The project took about 10 hours over three days. I’m a total amateur but Pinterest, YouTube and Bunnings staff at Victoria Point (QLD) helped me a lot!
All up, with paint and mistakes, the project came to just over $1000. If I hadn’t made mistakes and got the Gyprock which I didn’t need, I could’ve got it under $800.
