How to level a slope?

Hi team,

I have a bit of land between the house and the retaining wall with the neighbour, which slopes down from the front of the house. I want to level it off a bit, not entirely, just to make the slope less of an issue, to make better use of the land. I'm thinking adding more soil / gravel or the like, but unsure which kind. Then compact and add paver or gravel ontop to dress up.

Does it sound like a good approach? And which type of soil do I need?

I would do two or three levels with sleepers.

Sleeper pegs.

I would simply fill with soil and add grass seed but if you prefer do pavers or pebbles.

Thank you for your question about levelling off the slope.

If you're looking to level off the slope, then you would have to add some kind of retaining structures, like @AlanM52 has mentioned. If you didn't add retaining structures, then any added material would likely wash down the hill when you have heavy rain.

How far down the hill were you hoping to level?

Would retaining structures in these locations work?

Once these structures are in place, you could backfill them with anything, but if you wanted to grow grass, I'd look into buying a bulk bag of topsoil. They come from regional suppliers, so they are not always listed on our website. If you speak with the Special Orders team at your local store, they can let you know what is available in your area.

If you're looking to pave over the top, I would use road base, then compact it with a plate compactor before paving over the top. Check out How To Lay a Base For Pavers and How To Lay Pavers for some guidance.
