How to tighten Mondella toilet seat?

We have a Bunnings Mondella toilet with the plastic seat and lid.

It's fine in itself but the toilet seat keeps moving to one side. No matter how much we try to tighten the screws it eventually moves again. I'm not sure how tightly it is safe to tighten the screws. What's the best way to deal with this in a more permanent way?

In another toilet we have a caroma toilet and the seat never moves in this way. It has a ceramic toilet seat and lid. It does not have soft close though, is it possible to Make it soft close?

Have you got a photo of the specific seat that you are having issues with? Do you know which specific Mondella toilet you have?

Seeing what you are working with would certainly help me to understand and offer a solution.

A shifting toilet seat is a relatively common issue. It is often due to the mounting mechanism gradually loosening under repeated use or damaged or poorly seated washers, reducing the grip the mounting mechanism has on the toilet pan.

If you unscrew the toilet seat and check the washers, are they in good condition and seated correctly?

If not, then you could try replacing them with a rubber washer from an assorted washer kit, such as this FIX-A-TAP Assorted Washer Kit.

Outside of this, you could replace the mounting mechanism with a new one, such as this Kinetic Toilet Seat Fixing Kit or this FIX-A-LOO Toilet Seat Blind Fixing Kit.

There are also options for replacing your seat with a soft-close toilet seat; you would just have to match up the shape of the seat. Check out How To Replace a Toilet Seat and this Toilet Seat Selection Guide for further guidance.

This is the toilet. It was installed 11 years ago. Can you tell the model from the picture and is it still being sold?

Since I can't reach under the toilet where the nut is I'm afraid to remove anything in case the whole screw just falls in.

Each time we tighten it lasts about four or five months before it starts getting loose again

It looks very similar to the Mondella Rococo Rimless Back To Wall Toilet Suite WELS 4 Star 4.6L/Full. Can you please take a photo of the hinges of the toilet seat? This will give us a better idea of how it is attached to your toilet suite. It's possible that it has a push-to-release button that will allow you to access the hinge set of the toilet seat. I've placed a general diagram how the hinges are connected to your toilet pan.

Here is the close-up it looks similar to what you have posted above.

Is it true that you cannot really adjust the toilet once it has been installed fully? It says do not fully tighten in the instructions but that would allow the toilet seat to move around laterally.

Hi @bara3,

I can only imagine a note about not tightening fully would also be accompanied by "until you have the seat positioned correctly". At that point, you should definitely tighten the fixings.

I think you should leave them loose, pop the seat on, align it on the pan, remove it, being careful not to rotate the fittings, tighten the fittings, pop the cover plates on and push the seat fully onto the spigots.

If you tighten the fitting before checking the seat alignment, the seat likely won't fit on, or it will be off centre.

How tight can i fasten it? In afraid of breaking something

Single hand screwdriver? Two hand as hard as possible?

One-handed as tight as you can is typically enough. It's unlikely that you would break anything.

I had a similar issue and it wasn't actually that the toilet seat screws weren't tight enough, it was that the pins were too short/thin so it would rock from side to side. I shaved about 3-4mm off the plastic casing so that the pins would reach far enough to be able to click in. There was still a slight wobble so I taped up the pins and made them slightly thicker and no issues at all now.
