What tall trees for home entrance?

Hi there,

I was hoping for some suggestions for 2 trees at the front entrance to our house.

We currently have 2 ficus balls in large pots which are struggling to keep the leaves effectively not being in the ground. I'm looking to replace this location with 2 tress in-ground that would be around 3 - 5m tall maximum, with maybe a bit of different colour other than green that will suit the area.

I'm wondering if there's any suggestions for trees don't have aggressive root systems that will pull up the nearby pavers and cause any issues with the house foundation

It's about 2.2m from the front porch foundation and between 700mm - 1100mm between the pavers.

Would love some suggestions.

Hi @d23,

With any of these suggestions, mainly due to the limited space in relation to the pavers, I would suggest installing a Root Barrier around these trees. When planting, dig down around 500mm and 1000mm in diameter to install the barrier. Once in place, backfill with the soil and plant your trees. This barrier will help direct the root growth down before it moves laterally, which will help protect your pavers.

In terms of trees you could use, here are some suggestions -

Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) dwarf varieties such as Acoma or Indian Summer, which grow to about 3–5 metres, will provide vibrant summer blooms in pink, purple, red, or white, beautiful autumn foliage, and attractive bark.

 

Magnolia ‘Kay Parris’ (Magnolia grandiflora) are evergreen with glossy foliage and fragrant white blooms, and they have shallow, non-aggressive roots—ideal for formal settings.

Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) provides stunning red or orange autumn colour and delicate foliage. Upright varieties reach 3–4 metres and have roots that won’t disturb nearby paving.

Frangipani (Plumeria rubra) offers a tropical feel with fragrant flowers in white, yellow, or pink, and grows slowly to around 5 metres. Its roots are non-invasive, making it ideal near foundations or pavers.
