How to prime surface for tiling splashback?

Hi all,

I’m looking for advice about how to best prime the wall after removing a tile splashback - before the tiler comes to apply the new tiles. Most parts are to the cement render, with some of the white adhesive remaining. I’m really hoping there’s a way to do this without calling a plasterer! Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It would be best to continue removing as much of the adhesive as possible to reveal the original surface. At a minimum, you want to remove everything that is protruding from the wall, as this will ensure a relatively flat surface for tiling. The flatter you can get it, the less work the tiler will have to do using the thickness of the adhesive to accommodate for the unevenness of the wall. Any ridges or high spots left behind can make it harder for the tiles to sit evenly and may affect the finish. Depending on the type of adhesive, a bolster chisel, or multi-tool with a scraping blade can make the job easier. Once you’ve removed the bulk of the adhesive, you can lightly sand the surface to help smooth out small imperfections. 

It really depends on what the tiler is willing to work with, so it might be worth sending them some images to get their opinion before you proceed too far.
