How to attach and extend a push-on shower head?

Hi all,

We've recently bought a push on shower head for use in the bathroom (https://www.bunnings.com.au/estilo-push-on-shower_p0144264). Unfortunately, we’ve got a couple of problems with it we need to fix before using!

1 - the length of the hose 1.2 m is a little too short to reach to the shower.

2 - the bathroom sink tap that we are attaching to has a very short lip to attach to, about 7mm. We’ve tried a hose clamp but this doesn’t do the job.

In order to try and hit two birds with one stone, is there any standalone hoses which we could use as an interface between the sink tap and the plug on shower head? I’m guessing it would have to much better match the sink tap form and maybe we will have to use a thinner hose clamp?

Hi @lm4,

It’s a tricky one to overcome. If you were to replace the hose entirely, you’d need a suitable fitting on one end to screw onto the shower head and something on the other end that could securely attach to your sink spout — and I’m not aware of any off-the-shelf hoses that would suit that exact situation.

Likewise, extending the existing hose with extra tubing would be challenging, as finding a compatible adaptor that doesn’t leak or restrict water flow can be difficult.

The push-on spout adaptor you have now is pretty much the only style made for that purpose, and since your current hose isn’t long enough, there’s not much point trying to cobble together a workaround — it would likely be fiddly, unreliable, and end up costing more in parts than it’s worth. We do have the Pope Indoor Tap Adaptor , which the push-on adaptor could potentially connect to; still, you'll have the short hose. If that did work, we have a range of clear vinyl hose. If there happens to be one close to the external size of the current hose, it could be cut and extended with it by heating the ends of the clear hose in hot water and pushing it over the white hose.

Could you tell us more about where you'll be using the shower head and where it needs to reach across to? Are you using it in a bath, and is there another water source?

Thanks for your response.

We'll be using the shower head in the shower which is directly across from the sink, its about 1.5 m from sink to shower door. The reason we aren't using the existing shower head is because we need one which is hand-held but still for use in the shower.

For the clear vinyl hose, would the 7mm tap length (sink side) likely be enough to maintain a good seal/pressure? With a small hose clamp?

It sounds like it will probably be too fiddly so maybe we'll just need to consider a new shower head instead!

Oh, it would be much easier to replace your showerhead @lm4. Under the right conditions, it's a 10-minute job! Check out this guide: How to replace a shower head. We changed a standard shower head over to one that is on a hose. You could also go for one of these rain head and handheld versions.

7mm tubing likely has a 5mm internal diameter. It would be fine for washing a baby, but I don't think it would give you much flow for a proper shower.

Okay thanks for that - in that case looks like we'll just replace the showerhead instead! I'm 90% sure the one we are replacing would be this model( https://www.bunnings.com.au/brasshards-chrome-all-directional-shower-rose-wels-3-star-8l-min_p5004127). Would the steps for a dual head system (like this: https://www.bunnings.com.au/flexispray-wels-3-star-9l-min-chrome-havana-short-twin-system_p0307305) be more or less the same?

Yes, the guide that Mitchell recommended is applicable to the Flexispray WELS 3 Star 9L/min Chrome Havana Short Twin System. My best advice is to take your time and don't rush the installation.
